Healthcare AI’s overlooked work happens in the supply chain

Routina featured in The StartupBeat and The Sociable

Most of the conversation about AI in healthcare is about diagnosis and imaging. This week, two publications looked at a side of it that rarely makes headlines: the supply chain. The StartupBeat ran Healthcare AI’s overlooked work happens in the supply chain, and The Sociable ran The case for healthcare AI that never sees a patient. Both feature Routina and the work we do with medical product distributors.

Both articles start from a federal audit of the VA Augusta Health Care System, where missing, expired and untrackable supplies repeatedly forced the main operating room to close. An automated inventory system had been bought, only partly installed, and then switched off. It’s a lesson we learned running Flexio, our healthcare logistics company: software laid on top of a broken process doesn’t fix it. It makes it fail faster.

That’s why Routina starts with the work itself: the purchase orders, imports, warehouse activity and deliveries that move between distributors, pharmacies, clinics and labs, and the manual reconciliation it takes to keep them in sync. Our agents take on that coordination on top of the systems our clients already run.

The articles also cover how we keep people in charge. Every output our agents produce is scored for confidence and risk. Anything low-confidence or high-risk goes to a person who can override it, and every override is recorded and reviewed.

The most useful AI in healthcare may never see a patient. It makes sure the right product is on the shelf, the paperwork is ready before it’s needed, and a person signs off on every decision that matters. AI does the busywork. People stay accountable.
